Yue Studio gives the impression of a clean and tranquil Taiwanese village. Hidden in a peaceful neighborhood on Tianhe Nan Yi Lu, it is nestled among a great number of small cafes. Looking out of the shop through the French windows, the hustle and bustle of Guangzhou seems to vanish.
While the studio doesn’t actually have any roots in Taiwan, it has been influenced by other East Asian cultures. Bei, a Korean artist in his early 30s, spent eight years in Japan, where he was fascinated by the country’s handicrafts and ceramics. Teaming up with Yue, a Hubei girl who enjoys everything about leather, he created his own brand in Korea in 2011. Just a few months ago, they moved their operation to Guangzhou.
The studio is divided into two parts. At the front, hand-made ceramic utensils collected in Japan, antique leather handbags from flea markets in Korea, America and Europe, skin products produced domestically and fragrant coffee beans baked by the studio itself are sold.
The rear part has been converted into a workshop with a rectangular table in the center and tools on the walls. Pieces of vegetable-tanned leather imported from France and Italy sit atop shelves. Here, Yue and Bei host regular classes on making leather objects, providing step-by-step guidance on design, cutting and stitching.
“Leather is not an object. It is animated. Its color and texture changes in your presence,” Yue says.
Meeting new friends and having fun is a priority at the studio, to which end gatherings for lovers of photography, coffee or even cooking are also held.
Whether it's a leather handbag, a cup of coffee or a cupcake, Yue Studio offers varied opportunities to create with your hands.
